What Etsy allows from a Kleinanzeigen seller

The two marketplaces start from opposite positions. Kleinanzeigen is a general classifieds site: a used pram, a bike, a box of records and a sofa all sit side by side, and nobody asks where you got them. Etsy is a curated marketplace with written rules about what may be sold at all.

Etsy’s help centre says every item must be made, designed, handpicked or sourced by you. It sorts permitted items into four groups:

• Made by a seller — physical items you make by hand, or with tools such as a 3D printer, CNC machine or Cricut.
• Designed by a seller — mainly digital files you create. This group rarely matters for a Kleinanzeigen seller.
• Handpicked by a seller — vintage items that are at least 20 years old, items from nature, and certain curated collections.
• Sourced by a seller — craft supplies, party decorations and items personalised with a buyer’s text or image.

The rule that removes most secondhand stock is the one on reselling. Etsy says reselling is not allowed, and defines reselling as selling a commercially available item that you did not make or design. The exceptions are craft and party supplies, and vintage items over 20 years old. Etsy also says reselling is not allowed in its handmade category: you cannot list an item as handmade if you were not involved in designing or making it.

In practice, this means a Kleinanzeigen seller should sort stock before anything goes to Etsy. A 1970s teak side table qualifies as vintage. A three-year-old high-street jacket does not qualify, however good its condition. Etsy also says it may ask for extra photos or information about vintage items, such as their source, age, designer or materials, so keep what you know about each piece.

Why add Etsy to a Kleinanzeigen shop

Buyers beyond your postcode

Kleinanzeigen is built around Germany. Its own payment and buyer protection service, Sicher bezahlen, only covers shipping within Germany. Much of the rest happens by message and collection in person. That suits a sofa. It is a narrow market for a 1960s glass vase that a collector in Vienna, Lyon or Leeds would buy.

Etsy lets you set shipping destinations per listing, so the same vase can reach buyers in other countries. You decide where you ship and what you charge for it.

Fixed prices instead of message haggling

Kleinanzeigen listings invite offers by message, and a lot of sellers price with room to come down. Etsy listings sell at the listed price through checkout. If you are tired of answering “Letzter Preis?” (English: “Lowest price?”) on pieces that deserve their asking price, Etsy gives those pieces a second place to sell without the back-and-forth.

Search by era, material and style

Etsy buyers often search by decade, material or style rather than by a plain object name. Your listing on Etsy needs the attributes that make it findable that way: the era, what it is made of, and who made it. Kleinanzeigen ads rarely carry that detail, so the move to Etsy is a chance to write it down once and keep it in FLUF Connect for every channel.

Keep the local sale as a fallback

Crosslisting does not force a choice. The item stays on Kleinanzeigen for a local buyer, and appears on Etsy for a buyer further away. Whichever sale comes first, FLUF Connect ends the listing on the other channel.

What each marketplace charges

The table compares what each marketplace charges you, the seller. Kleinanzeigen’s Sicher bezahlen service fee is paid by the buyer, so it is described separately below rather than set against Etsy’s seller fees.

Commercial sellers on Kleinanzeigen are on a separate fee schedule that varies by category. If you trade as a business, check that schedule rather than the private allowances above.

The buyer’s side on Kleinanzeigen

When a buyer pays through Sicher bezahlen, the buyer pays the item price, the shipping and a service fee of €0.50 + 4.5% of the purchase price. The money is held until the buyer receives the item. This fee does not reduce what you receive, but it does raise what a buyer pays, which is one reason local cash collection stays common.

Etsy fees on one sale, worked through

Take a vintage lamp listed on Etsy at €60, with €10 shipping, sold to one buyer. Using the published rates:

• Listing fee: $0.20, charged when you list.
• Transaction fee: 6.5% of €70 = €4.55.
• Payment processing: 4% of €70 + €0.30 = €3.10.

That is €7.65 plus the $0.20 listing fee, before any VAT on Etsy’s fees and before Offsite Ads. If Etsy attributes the order to an Offsite Ad, add 15% or 12% of the order total, which Etsy caps at $100 per order. Etsy also says VAT may be charged on its seller fees. Put these numbers into your Etsy price, not your Kleinanzeigen price; FLUF Connect lets you set a different price per channel.

Offsite Ads: optional, until it is not

Etsy enrols every shop in Offsite Ads. If your shop has never made $10,000 in any consecutive 365-day period, you can opt out. Once it has, participation is required for the lifetime of the shop, at the lower 12% rate. A small vintage shop that opts out pays no advertising fee on those orders.

How to set it up with FLUF Connect

2. Connect Kleinanzeigen from the channels page in FLUF Connect by signing in to your Kleinanzeigen account.
3. Connect Etsy by signing in to your Etsy shop and approving FLUF Connect’s access.
4. Bring your Kleinanzeigen ads into FLUF Connect. They appear in your listings view as products you can edit and crosslist.
5. Select only Etsy-eligible pieces. Leave out anything that Etsy would count as reselling.
6. Complete the Etsy details for each piece. See the checklist in the next section.
7. Set your Etsy price, with Etsy’s fees in mind.
8. Crosslist to Etsy. You can do this one item at a time or as a bulk action.

After that, FLUF Connect checks both channels for sales. When a piece sells on one, FLUF Connect ends it on the other.

What you check before publishing

A Kleinanzeigen ad is short by design: a title, a description, photos, a price and a few category fields. An Etsy listing asks for more, and a wrong answer can get a listing removed. Before you publish each piece to Etsy, check these points:

• Who made it and when. Etsy asks whether you made the item, and when it was made. Only choose a vintage era if you can support the item’s age.
• The category. Pick the category that describes the object itself. Kleinanzeigen’s categories are broader, so do not assume the closest-sounding match is right.
• The title. A Kleinanzeigen title is often written for a local search (“Stehlampe 70er”). Rewrite it for Etsy with the era, material and style, in the language your buyers search in.
• The description. Add measurements, condition notes, any repairs, and any marks or signatures. Buyers who cannot inspect the piece in person rely on this.
• Photos. Show wear, labels and maker’s marks. Remove any photo with a phone number or address in the background.
• Condition wording. Describe flaws plainly. Vintage buyers expect wear; they do not expect surprises.
• Price and currency. Set the Etsy price separately from your Kleinanzeigen price, with Etsy’s fees and your shipping cost included.
• Shipping. Confirm the destinations, the parcel size and what you charge. Large furniture that you sell for collection on Kleinanzeigen may not be worth listing on Etsy at all.
• Quantity. Most secondhand pieces are one of a kind. Keep the quantity at one.

Which Kleinanzeigen stock fits Etsy

Stock that usually fits

Etsy’s craft supplies guidance lists textile supplies such as yarn, thread, fabric, needles, embroidery hoops and zippers, and craft books with instructions for projects. It excludes ready-to-use commercial products, and names examples such as home DIY supplies (drawer pulls, knobs, brackets), office supplies and cosmetic tools. Check a supply against that list before you list it.

Stock that usually does not fit

• Recent high-street clothing. Commercially available and less than 20 years old, so it counts as reselling.
• Current flat-pack furniture and homewares. The same reasoning applies. Keep these on Kleinanzeigen.
• Electronics, tools and household appliances. Unless an item is genuinely vintage, Etsy does not want it.
• Handmade items you bought from someone else. Etsy does not allow reselling in its handmade category.

The sort takes some discipline, because it can be tempting to list borderline items and see what happens. A listing that breaks Etsy’s rules puts the whole shop at risk, not just that one listing. Etsy’s reselling help page links to its guidance on reinstating a suspended account, which shows how seriously it treats the issue.

What syncs and what does not

Both Kleinanzeigen and Etsy support sale detection and sold-elsewhere removal in FLUF Connect, so this pair works in both directions.

One habit makes this pair safer. On Kleinanzeigen, a buyer often agrees a deal by message and collects days later. Until that sale is complete, the piece is still live on Etsy. If a deal is agreed but not yet done, and you want to hold the piece for that buyer, mark it sold in FLUF Connect yourself rather than wait.

Shipping and legal duties for German sellers

Shipping

Etsy sales mean posting parcels, which is a change for a seller used to buyers collecting from the door. DHL’s domestic parcel page lists a maximum size of 120 x 60 x 60 cm for parcels over 2 kg, and smaller Päckchen formats for light items up to 2 kg. Measure bulky pieces before you list them on Etsy, and check your chosen carrier’s international prices for each destination you offer.

Remember that Sicher bezahlen shipping and buyer protection on Kleinanzeigen only apply within Germany. Your Etsy shipping settings are separate, and you set destinations and costs for Etsy there.

Trader status and the right of withdrawal

Etsy’s help page on EU law explains that professional sellers, which it calls traders, who ship to the EU or EEA must offer a minimum 14-day return and refund policy, known as the right of withdrawal (Widerrufsrecht). Traders must also show buyers information such as their business registration number and business address.

Etsy treats you as a trader if you registered on Etsy as a professional seller, and then shows your trader status and business information on your listings to visitors in the EU. Whether you are legally a trader depends on how you sell, not only on the setting you choose. Etsy says it cannot tell you whether you need to comply, and recommends a local legal professional.

Some items are outside the right of withdrawal, including made-to-order and customised items. From early July 2026, Etsy says EU buyers can submit a withdrawal request through a help request on their purchase, and you are responsible for reviewing it and refunding valid requests.

Impressum and other German rules

German businesses selling online generally need a legal notice (Impressum), and statutory warranty rules (Gewährleistung) apply to sales by businesses to consumers. The exact duties depend on your situation, so take advice from a German lawyer or tax adviser before you list as a business. None of this changes on Kleinanzeigen when you add Etsy, but selling through a second marketplace to buyers in other countries makes it harder to ignore.

Relisting, offers and bulk edits

Relisting

Kleinanzeigen ads in the consumer goods categories run for 30 days and can be renewed without limit at no charge for private sellers. Etsy listings expire after 4 months, and auto-renew charges another $0.20.

Offers

Bulk operations
