Crosslist from BigCommerce to Etsy — Who Actually Qualifies

Etsy takes what a seller made, designed, handpicked or sourced. A wholesale-sourced BigCommerce catalogue qualifies for none of it. Here is who does qualify, why the variant matrix is the real technical problem, and what each platform costs.

Key Takeaways — crosslisting from BigCommerce to Etsy

  • Most BigCommerce catalogues are not eligible for Etsy, and no integration can fix that. Under the Seller Policy effective 9 July 2026, everything on Etsy must be “made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by a seller”. A wholesale-sourced or dropshipped catalogue meets none of those tests.
  • The eligible catalogue is a real business, though: makers who already sell their own work through BigCommerce, print-on-demand shops selling their own designs, dealers in 20+ year stock, and craft-supply merchants — craft supplies may be commercially manufactured.
  • Etsy has no first-party BigCommerce channel. BigCommerce’s own channels documentation lists Amazon, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Jet and Walmart. Etsy reaches BigCommerce only through Feedonomics, Codisto or a third-party app.
  • The technical trap is the variant matrix. BigCommerce holds up to 600 variants per product, each with its own SKU and stock. Etsy holds quantity per listing, with variations layered inside. Collapse the matrix and per-SKU stock stops being true; explode it and you multiply $0.20 listing fees.
  • Etsy costs the seller at four points: $0.20 to list (renewing every four months), 6.5% of the order including any shipping you charge, payment processing (US 3% + $0.25, UK 4% + £0.20, eurozone 4% + €0.30) and, in some countries, a regulatory operating fee — 0.48% in the UK.
  • Etsy’s reach: roughly 87 million active buyers and $2.58bn of gross merchandise sales in the quarter to 30 June 2026, at a 25.9% take rate.
  • Cost: FLUF Connect crosslists to 50+ marketplaces from one dashboard. £1 for 7 days, then plans from £9/month (Starter). There is no free plan.

First question: will Etsy take your catalogue at all?

This page is unusual among crosslisting guides because the honest answer for most readers is “no, and here is why”. Getting that out of the way first saves you a store set-up fee and a suspension.

Etsy’s Seller Policy, effective 9 July 2026, states that “everything listed for sale on Etsy must be made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by a seller.” The four verbs are defined in the Creativity Standards, and every item must “incorporate a human touch”:

  • Made — physical items you make by hand or with your own tools, including a 3D printer, CNC, Cricut or laser cutter, from your own original design. Assembling to a manufacturer’s instructions does not count; nor does a commercial item with only superficial alteration.
  • Designed — your original designs produced or printed by a third party, or sold as a digital download. Print-on-demand qualifies, and so do AI-assisted creations you prompted, provided the AI use is disclosed in the listing description.
  • Handpicked — items at least 20 years old that you personally curated. Etsy may ask for documentation of source, age, designer or materials, and explicitly bars resold items newer than 20 years “even if the item is designed to appear vintage”.
  • Sourced — craft supplies, party supplies and buyer-personalised print-on-demand. Craft supplies may be commercially manufactured and even drop-shipped. But blanks that are ready to use without craft intervention — plain t-shirts, hats, tumblers — are not craft supplies, and neither are generic cooking, office, garden, automotive or cosmetic goods.

Outside those four, Etsy prohibits reselling and dropshipping. Its help documentation is direct about the boundary: adding a card, gift tag or note to an otherwise unaltered commercial item does not make that item eligible.

This is enforced, not decorative. Etsy has said it removed 22% more listings and suspended 1.5 times more sellers under the Creativity Standards year on year, and in July 2026 described applying large language models to that enforcement. Listing removals can be appealed within 180 days through Shop Manager, and Etsy warns that a video of a finished item is not, by itself, proof that you made it.

The uncomfortable implication for a platform migration: BigCommerce is a general commerce platform. A large share of BigCommerce stores are wholesale-sourced retail or B2B, and that inventory has no route onto Etsy. If that is you, the useful destinations from a BigCommerce catalogue are eBay, Amazon or Walmart, not Etsy.

Which BigCommerce merchants this route is for

Four merchant shapes clear the policy comfortably:

BigCommerce store type Etsy category What to watch
Maker selling their own production — ceramics, furniture, jewellery, leather goods Made by a seller Any third party producing your design must be declared as a production partner
Print-on-demand shop selling original artwork Designed by a seller The design must be yours. AI-generated artwork must be disclosed in the description
Antiques or mid-century dealer with a store Handpicked by a seller Every item must be 2006 or earlier and datable on request
Craft-supply merchant — yarn, beads, findings, fabric, tools Sourced by a seller Commercial manufacture is fine here; ready-to-use blanks are not
General retail, wholesale-sourced apparel, electronics, dropship Not eligible No configuration of the integration changes this

Craft supplies deserve a note, because it is the category most BigCommerce merchants overlook. It is the one place Etsy permits commercially manufactured and even drop-shipped goods, and a BigCommerce catalogue of raw materials — the sort of store built on hundreds of variant-heavy SKUs — maps onto it naturally. If you sell things people make other things with, you are probably eligible, and you probably assumed you were not.

There is no native BigCommerce–Etsy channel

Worth stating plainly, because BigCommerce’s marketing pages name Etsy often enough to imply otherwise. BigCommerce’s own channels documentation lists its marketplace integrations as Amazon, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Jet and Walmart. Etsy is not among them.

Where Etsy does appear — on the omnichannel solutions page, alongside Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Target+, Mercado Libre and the ad networks — it is reached through Feedonomics or Codisto, not through a first-party channel. Feedonomics is now a sister brand: since around 1 August 2025 BigCommerce, Feedonomics and Makeswift have sat under a parent brand called Commerce, and the Nasdaq ticker moved from BIGC to CMRC. The company remains public and independent; it was not acquired.

That matters commercially. A feed-management product is priced and shaped for large catalogues going to large marketplaces. If your Etsy-eligible range is 80 handmade SKUs, a feed platform is the wrong instrument, and the app-store alternatives start around $29 a month for a single marketplace connection.

The variant matrix problem, and the three ways out

This is the concrete technical difficulty of the route, and it is worth understanding before you connect anything.

BigCommerce models a product with options that generate variants. The variant is the sellable unit: it carries its own SKU, price, weight and inventory. A product may hold up to 600 variants, with SKU strings up to 255 characters. Separately, BigCommerce has modifiers — engraving text, gift wrap, an insurance checkbox — which are customisations that do not create a SKU. Stock is tracked either at product level or at variant level, and those are distinct modes with distinct webhooks.

Etsy works the other way round. Quantity lives on the listing, and variations sit inside it. There is no per-variation stock ledger of the kind BigCommerce assumes.

So a 60-variant BigCommerce product has three possible fates, and you should choose deliberately:

  1. Collapse to one Etsy listing with variations. Cheapest — one $0.20 listing fee — and tidiest for buyers. But per-SKU stock truth is lost: Etsy holds one quantity where BigCommerce held sixty. When a colour sells out in BigCommerce, nothing tells the Etsy listing.
  2. Explode into one listing per variant. Stock stays honest and each SKU maps one-to-one to a listing, which is what any inventory sync actually needs. It costs $0.20 per listing per four months, so 60 variants is $12 a quarter before you sell anything, and it buries your shop in near-duplicate listings.
  3. Publish a curated subset. In practice this is what works. Send the ten best-selling variants as individual listings, leave the long tail on BigCommerce, and let the storefront be the place where the full matrix lives.

Option 1 is where oversells come from. If your Etsy listing represents many BigCommerce variants, there is no unambiguous way to decrement it when one variant sells — and ambiguity in an inventory decrement is exactly how a customer buys something you do not have.

What each platform costs, worked

BigCommerce

The current plans are Core, Growth, Scale and Performance — the old Standard/Plus/Pro names are gone, so any guide using them is out of date. Each self-service plan carries a trailing-twelve-month sales ceiling that forces an upgrade:

Plan Monthly Annual, per month Sales ceiling Open payment provider fee
Core $39 $29 up to $30K TTM 2.0%
Growth $105 $79 up to $100K TTM 1.0%
Scale $399 $299 $33,333/month, then 0.9% overage 0.6%
Performance custom, from $1,499 $1M+ annual none

Note the qualification on the familiar “no transaction fees” claim. There is a fee of 0% only through an embedded payment provider — Stripe, PayPal, Adyen and similar. Take payment through another gateway and the open payment provider fee above applies.

For context on the company behind the platform: in the quarter to 30 June 2026 it reported revenue of $84.5m, annual recurring revenue of $360.5m, and $8.8bn of merchant GMV, up 14% year on year, with net revenue retention of 95.8%.

Etsy

  • Listing: $0.20 per listing, charged again on every renewal. Listings expire after four months. Multi-quantity listings are charged $0.20 for each additional unit sold.
  • Transaction: 6.5% of the total order — and Etsy is explicit that this “applies to shipping and gift wrapping (if you charge your customers for those)”. Personalisation charges are included too.
  • Payment processing: set by the country of your bank account. United States 3% + $0.25. United Kingdom 4% + £0.20. Eurozone 4% + €0.30. Canada 3% + C$0.25 domestic. Australia 3% + A$0.25 domestic.
  • Regulatory operating fee, where applicable: UK 0.48%, Canada 0.50%, Spain 0.88%, Italy 0.80%, France 1.14%, Hungary 1.97%.
  • Offsite Ads: 15% of attributed orders while your shop has always been under $10,000 in any 365-day window, with the right to opt out. Once you pass $10,000 the rate drops to 12% and participation becomes required for the lifetime of the shop. Capped at $100 per attributed order, on a 30-day click attribution window.
  • Optional: Etsy Ads from a $1 daily minimum; Etsy Plus at $10 a month; a one-time, non-refundable shop set-up fee that varies by location.

A $48 handmade item, both channels

Your BigCommerce store Etsy
Per-item listing cost $0.00 $0.20 every four months
Commission $0.00 $3.12 (6.5%)
Payment processing (US) ~$1.64 via an embedded provider $1.69 (3% + $0.25)
Platform subscription $29–$299/month, all products none required
Net on this sale ~$46.36 ~$42.99

The arithmetic says the storefront wins per sale, which is obvious and not the point. The point is that a BigCommerce store has no demand of its own; Etsy has roughly 87 million active buyers, generating $2.58bn of gross merchandise sales in the quarter to 30 June 2026 at a 25.9% take rate. You are buying access to a buying audience for about 10–12% of the ticket. Whether that is good value depends entirely on whether those buyers would otherwise have found you.

Field mapping: BigCommerce product to Etsy listing

BigCommerce field Etsy field Transfer Notes
Product name Title (140 characters) ⚡ Rewritten Etsy titles are search real estate, not catalogue labels. A terse SKU-style name wastes them
Description (HTML) Description ⚡ Converted Assume HTML formatting is flattened; write for plain text
Images Photos (20) + 2 videos ✅ Automatic Etsy’s cap is 20, not the 10 most guides still quote
Price Price ✅ Automatic 2.5% currency conversion fee if listing currency differs from your payment account
Variants (up to 600) Variations within one listing ⚠️ Decision required See the three options above — this is the real work of the migration
Variant SKU + variant stock Listing quantity ⚠️ Lossy Etsy holds one quantity per listing; per-variant stock has nowhere to live
Modifiers (engraving, gift wrap) Personalisation field ⚡ Mapped Modifiers create no SKU in BigCommerce, so they map cleanly to personalisation
Category Etsy taxonomy ⚡ Smart mapped BigCommerce categories are yours to invent; Etsy’s taxonomy is fixed
Custom fields (250 chars) Attributes ⚡ Mapped Etsy attributes vary by category and are not free-form
Tags (13, 20 chars each) ⚠️ Manual No BigCommerce field corresponds. These drive Etsy search — write them by hand
“Who made it / when” attributes ⚠️ Manual These are the fields that carry your eligibility claim
Production partner ⚠️ Manual Set at account level, disclosed on relevant listings

Two fields are worth disproportionate attention. Tags, because thirteen twenty-character tags are the single largest lever on whether an Etsy listing is ever seen, and nothing in your BigCommerce catalogue populates them. And the who-made-it and when-made attributes, because they are the structured form of your eligibility claim — the place where a wrong answer is not a metadata error but a policy violation.

What FLUF Connect syncs, and what it does not

What works. FLUF Connect reads your BigCommerce catalogue and creates Etsy listings from it: images, price, description, category mapping and attributes. Both channels support order sync and sold-detection, so a sale on either side can be reflected across your other channels, and Etsy supports relisting through FLUF.

What does not. Neither channel is a live quantity mirror in FLUF Connect. The unit of sync is the product record, not a per-variant stock ledger — which is precisely why option 2 above, one listing per variant, is the arrangement that behaves best. Collapse sixty variants into one Etsy listing and no automation can decrement it correctly, because the information needed to do so was thrown away at mapping time.

Production partners, GPSR and the DDP rule

Production partners. Etsy defines one as a company or individual, not part of your shop, that physically produces items from your own original designs. If you use a print-on-demand supplier or a contract manufacturer, you must add them under Shop Manager → Settings → Partners you work with, and disclose them on the relevant listings; they surface in your shop’s About section. You may hide the partner’s name behind a descriptive title. You cannot add production partners to supplies or handpicked items, and listing a wholesaler or commercial retailer as a “partner” is treated as reselling and can lead to suspension.

GPSR. Selling into the EU requires an EU-based economic operator responsible for product safety. Etsy asks sellers to add that operator to the account, keep the Manufacturers field current and complete the product safety information field. BigCommerce has no equivalent catalogue field, so this cannot be mapped from your store — it has to be supplied at the Etsy end. Listings that leave it blank in regulated categories can be hidden from EU buyers.

Delivered Duty Paid. New with the 9 July 2026 Seller Policy: non-US sellers shipping to US buyers must use a Delivered Duty Paid method. If you are a UK or EU BigCommerce merchant used to sending DDU and letting the carrier bill the customer, that changes your landed cost and needs to be in your Etsy pricing before you list, not after.

And Etsy’s active-seller count, which circulates widely from earnings-call coverage but does not appear in the shareholder letter we read.

Frequently Asked Questions

Only if they meet Etsy's Creativity Standards. The Seller Policy effective 9 July 2026 requires that everything listed be "made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by a seller". A wholesale-sourced retail catalogue, a dropshipping operation or a general merchandise store meets none of those tests, and no integration changes that. Makers, print-on-demand shops selling their own designs, dealers in 20+ year stock and craft-supply merchants are eligible.

No. BigCommerce's own channels documentation lists its marketplace integrations as Amazon, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Jet and Walmart — Etsy is not among them. Where Etsy appears on BigCommerce marketing pages it is reached through Feedonomics or Codisto, both feed-management products, or through third-party apps. Feedonomics is now a sister brand: BigCommerce, Feedonomics and Makeswift sit under a parent brand called Commerce, and the Nasdaq ticker changed from BIGC to CMRC around 1 August 2025.

They don't map cleanly, and this is the main technical problem of the route. BigCommerce treats the variant as the sellable unit — up to 600 per product, each with its own SKU, price and stock. Etsy holds quantity on the listing, with variations layered inside it. You have three options: collapse the matrix into one listing (cheap, but per-SKU stock truth is lost), publish one listing per variant (honest stock, but $0.20 per listing every four months), or publish a curated subset of your best sellers and leave the long tail on your storefront. The third is usually what works.

Four things. $0.20 to list an item, charged again on every renewal, with listings expiring after four months. A 6.5% transaction fee on the total order, which Etsy states applies to shipping and gift wrapping if you charge for them. Payment processing set by the country of your bank account — 3% + $0.25 in the United States, 4% + £0.20 in the United Kingdom, 4% + €0.30 in the eurozone. And in some countries a regulatory operating fee, which is 0.48% in the UK and 0.50% in Canada.

Only until your shop passes $10,000 in any 365-day window. Below that threshold you are enrolled at 15% of attributed orders but may opt out. Once the shop has made $10,000, the rate drops to 12% and participation becomes required for the lifetime of the shop — there is no opting out afterwards. The fee is capped at $100 per attributed order, on a 30-day click attribution window. A BigCommerce merchant moving an established range across should expect to cross that threshold quickly and plan for 12% on ad-attributed sales as a permanent cost.

Yes, and it is the exception most BigCommerce merchants overlook. Etsy's Creativity Standards define sourced items as tools or materials whose primary purpose is creating a new item by hand, and these may be commercially manufactured and even drop-shipped. So a catalogue of yarn, beads, findings, fabric or tools is eligible where a catalogue of finished goods is not. The limit is that ready-to-use blanks — plain t-shirts, hats, tumblers — do not count as craft supplies, and neither do generic cooking, office, garden, automotive or cosmetic goods.

If a third party physically produces items from your original designs, yes. Etsy calls them production partners, and they must be added under Shop Manager, Settings, Partners you work with, and disclosed on the relevant listings; they appear in your shop's About section. You can hide the partner's name behind a descriptive title. You cannot add production partners to craft supplies or handpicked items, and listing a wholesaler or commercial retailer as a "partner" is treated as reselling and can lead to suspension.

The Seller Policy that took effect on 9 July 2026 requires non-US sellers shipping to US buyers to use a Delivered Duty Paid method. If your BigCommerce store currently ships DDU and lets the carrier bill the customer on arrival, that changes your landed cost, and the difference needs to be inside your Etsy pricing before you list rather than discovered afterwards.

Etsy reported roughly 87 million active buyers and $2.58bn of gross merchandise sales in the quarter to 30 June 2026, at a 25.9% take rate. Your BigCommerce storefront has no inherent demand at all — its traffic is whatever your marketing brings. The trade is roughly 10 to 12% of each ticket in exchange for access to an existing buying audience, which is good value only where those buyers would not otherwise have found you.
